Section 508 Standards

Section 508 was created in 1998 as an amendment to the Rehabilitation Act which requires Federal agencies to make their information technology available to people with disabilities. The goal is to make available new opportunities for people with disabilities, and to encourage development of technologies that will help reach these goals. The law applies to all Federal agencies when they develop, procure, maintain, or use electronic and information technology. The standards apply to Federal web sites but not to private sector web sites.

For example, one of the benefits of being 508 compliant is that the web site text will be “read” to those with visual disabilities if they have the appropriate equipment. Furthermore, the web site text may also be converted to brail with the appropriate equipment.
